This five week introduction to opera is designed for those who have had little or no prior exposure to this greatest of all art forms - and for those who would like to reinforce their love of the human voice with a better grounding and framework of understanding. Starting with an explanation of voices, roles and "fachs", Iain Scott will then guide you through the key things to look for and to listen for in how to appreciate Italina opera as it developed over 400 years.

We will then explore the fundamentals of how an aria is constructed and how much and why, this structure changed over time, from the "Bel Canto" period to the "Can Belto" period. Each lecture will be illustrated with numerous video examples. In his last lecture, Iain will make sure that you know the key things to listen for in French, German and Russian forms of Opera. If you have ever thrilled to the combination of music and drama on stage or screen, this course will deepen your appreciation of all forms of musical theatre. Don't be afraid - come and have fun!

Family dynamics have been changing over the years. How do you hancle the children returning to the nest? What are some ways to deal with children's alternative lifestyle choices? How do we deal with unanticipated responsibilities? Is there life after your spouse is gone?

Older adults of any ability and experience are invited to attend this dance class that will offer a mixture of dance forms. Each class will begin with a gentle but lively set of warm-up exercises which will prepare the joints and muscles for moving fully. The remainder of the class will be spent learning and practicing two to three dance steps or styles. The focus of the class content will be based on the interests of the participants, with the specific focus on health and wellbeing and injury prevention.

CDL engages zoomers and beyond addressing their interest in volunteerism and adult learning.

MARCH 26 / THE SYRIAN BRIDE (2004) (97 min)

In Majdal Shams, the largest Druze village in Golan Heights on the Israeli-Syrian border, the Druze bride Mona is engaged to get married with Tallel, a television comedian that works in the Revolution Studios in Damascus. They have never met each other because of the occupation of the area by Israel since 1967; when Mona moves to Syria, she will lose her undefined nationality and will never be allowed to return home.

Genealogy is the most popular hobby in North America today. Given the plethora of services and programs that are currently available, people have been able to trace their family history back for generations and many have been able to connect with newly discovered living relatives from around the world. In this introduction to the field, members of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Canada will share their journeys through this fascinating process.

Participants will hear from a member who has just embarked on their search who will discuss the opportunities available in today’s technological society. As well, we will hear from one of the leading experts in the world-wide Jewish genealogy community.

Many people have harboured the dream of writing and publishing a book. It has never been easier to fulfill that yearning. Participants will be able to meet a former accountant who, in spite of serious illness, has published two books of limericks; a former school teacher whose children’s books can be purchased in specialty shops throughout North America; and a retired management consultant who has published two community memoirs that have total sales of over 2000 copies.

Join someone who has successfully self-published over twenty books for himself or other first-time authors as he shares the secrets of writing, publishing and distributing the book that you always wanted to write.

As the proverbial ‘pig in the snake’, the baby boomers have had an outsized impact on society for half a century. What shape has this taken in politics, the economy, our institu- tions? What are the implications for the future? Will boomers be seen as the heroes or villains of history?
