Parent and Child Rosh Chodesh

Join us as the JCC kicks-off its 2023/24 Parent & Child Rosh Chodesh Group. Rosh Chodesh is a minor holiday marking the emergence of the new moon and the beginning of a new month. In the past, Jewish women marked Rosh Chodesh as a day without work, holding feasts, leading charity initiatives, and engaging in other festive celebrations. More recently, the holiday has been reclaimed as an opportunity to come together for community building, food, and other practices.

In this first gathering, we will celebrate new beginnings with the new moon of Cheshvan and set our priorities for the upcoming year. Weather permitting, we will take a sunset walk to explore the trails around the Prosserman campus. Those joining the November group can pick-up copies of Liana Finck's Let There Be Light, a graphic novel based on Genesis/Bereshit that will be discussed next month.

Save the Deli! A Mouthwatering Meandering Through a Book About Food

Come together to make connections and savor a slow-motion reading of Save the Deli by David Sax. We will slowly savor a few chapters each week of our three-week session, adding our own stories of travel and food to the discussion. Part culinary travelogue, part cultural history exploring corned beef, pastrami, brisket, matzo balls, knishes, mustard and rye, from New York and Chicago, Florida, L.A., Montreal, Toronto, Paris, and beyond, you may find yourself arranging a trip to a local deli with fellow classmates to conduct your own taste-tests!
