JCC Moments

A message from our Executive Director, Andrew Levy

This edition of JCC Moments reminds us of the vital role relationships and community play at the JCC. The Prosserman JCC and Schwartz/Reisman Centre are more than just fitness centres, swimming pools and daycare facilities; they are gathering places where connections are formed across all ages and life stages. Whether bonding on the fitness floor, forging lifelong camp friendships, or sharing stories at breakfast club, the JCC brings people together to celebrate community and strengthen our ties to one another. We encourage you to nurture these bonds and embody the vibrant, inclusive spirit that defines the JCC.

Creating Lifelong Memories at Centre Camp

The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp celebrates its 35th anniversary this summer, with a tradition of inclusivity and community spirit that brings children together to build lifelong friendships and a strong connection to Jewish culture. Thanks to the JCC Children’s Fund, the camp experience is accessible to all, regardless of economic background.

Take, for example, Elaine Raifman's journey, which began on a subsidy from the JCC Children’s Fund. This support not only allowed her access to the camp but also helped her forge a lasting Jewish identity and deep friendships that persist decades later. Her story is a testament to the fund's critical role in enabling community participation for those who might otherwise be left on the sidelines.

Growing up benefiting from similar programs, I know firsthand how crucial these subsidies are. They don't just open doors—they build bridges to invaluable community experiences for every child. - Elaine Raifman

The camp experience is vividly brought to life through the stories of families like Jenn and David Brinder, who not only met at the camp but have seen their children thrive in the inclusive, nurturing environment it offers. "Centre Camp holds a special place in our hearts," Jenn shares. "It's where we grew and where our children now thrive, experiencing the joy of Shabbat and connecting with their heritage in a vibrant, inclusive setting."

Michelle Gilbert’s experience underscores the transformative power of the camp. Starting as a camper and progressing to a counselor and eventually a staff member, she reflects, "Camp is where I grew up, and it shaped who I am. The friends I made at camp are like family, still close to my heart after all these years."

Jared Golberg’s journey with Centre Camp also speaks volumes about its impact. "Camp taught me invaluable life skills outside the classroom," he explains.

It was at camp where I learned to connect deeply with others and embrace my creative side, which shaped my personal and professional life.
- Jared Golberg

This year, we also celebrate the introduction of the JCC Warriors program, further enhancing our commitment to nurturing young minds with innovative and inclusive programming that connects participants to the community for years to come.

Your contributions ensure that Centre Camp can continue to be a place where Jewish children learn, grow, and thrive. As we look forward to another summer, the impact of the JCC Children's Fund is crucial, ensuring every child can enjoy a summer of growth and happiness.

Transform Lives through the JCC Children’s Fund

Every dollar you contribute opens doors for children to explore and embrace their Jewish identity through programs including Centre Camp, Supplementary Schools, sports and more.

Over 6,000 children benefit from JCC programs annually, with 600 needing financial aid to access enriching experiences.

Help us ensure no child is left behind. Your support allows every child to thrive in a nurturing Jewish environment.

I wanted to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude for the incredible tuition subsidy you provided for our daughter to attend Centre Camp this summer. Words cannot adequately convey how much this opportunity meant to us and, most importantly, to our daughter. Your generosity made it possible for her to embark on an unforgettable summer adventure filled with joy, learning, and cherished memories.

The Breakfast Club: More than Just Coffee

At the heart of the Prosserman JCC lies a gathering that has become a cornerstone of community spirit—the Breakfast Club. Established in 1962, this group has not just survived; it has thrived, evolving into a vibrant meeting place for seniors who share more than just the first meal of the day.

The Breakfast Club has a storied history, growing from its modest beginnings as a men’s club at the Bathurst JCC. Long-time members like Syd Markowitz and Al Schwartz have been attending for years, drawn in by the camaraderie and the robust support network that the club offers.

Syd has been a part of our community since the club's early days. His routine at the JCC began in the 1960s, marking the start of a lifelong association. Each morning, Syd was not just a participant but an essential part of the club’s operations, volunteering to open our doors at 5:30 AM for many years. His dedication exemplifies the spirit of the Breakfast Club—more than a place to share a meal, it's a place to form lasting bonds and engage actively in community life.

Al, another longstanding member, shared his journey with the club, highlighting the significant social connections he has nurtured over the years. From discussing stocks to sharing life stories, the Breakfast Club has been Al's gateway to both friendships and financial tips. His tales from the early mornings at the club, filled with laughter and mutual support, underscore the club's role in enhancing the lives of its members through shared experiences.

The essence of the Breakfast Club lies in its inclusivity. Everyone from JCC members to new visitors finds a warm welcome. It's a place where seniors can mingle with peers, and new members find fast friends. The open-door policy ensures that no one is left behind, reflecting our core values of inclusivity and community support.

Benefits of the Breakfast Club extend beyond the morning hours. Regular attendees share how these morning meetups significantly enhance their well-being, offering a reliable source of community interaction that supports both mental and emotional health. This daily dose of friendship and support is crucial for many of our members.
